New Bedford to host annual half marathon

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — New Bedford is set to host its annual half marathon this weekend.

The 13.1 mile race will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 17, starting and finishing on Pleasant Street in downtown New Bedford.

Organizers said the annual race is held on the third Sunday of every March and is one of the oldest half marathon distance events in the Northeast.

Officials add that the race is managed by the volunteer-run New Bedford Half Marathon Race Committee, Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and City of New Bedford.

Those interested can register online, with a $95 entry fee for adults, $85 for 65 years and older, and $50 for youths.

Matt McDonald of Cambridge has won the race in back-to-back years, covering the course in 1:04:12 in 2023.

Maegan Krifchin, McDonald’s fiancée, was the winner on the women’s side last year, posting a time of 1:12:43.

Both McDonald and Krifchin competed in the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials Marathon.
