New Bedford, Warwick hosting early Independence Day fireworks

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — The celebration keeps rolling on in Southern New England, as the Whaling City gets ready to celebrate America’s independence tonight.

If all goes as planned, New Bedford’s firework show will burst over the city’s bay tonight.

Lower Union Street between south Second Street and JFK Boulevard will be closed to traffic for the fireworks.

In a release, mayor Jon Mitchell said the decision to move the 4thy of July celebrations to today was due to the availability of the fireworks company.

However, the city did not announce a rain date, should storms cancel tonight’s event, which is set for nine.

New Bedford will have other events throughout this holiday weekend, including a summer sound series concert tomorrow night, and the annual Cape Verdean recognition parade on Saturday.

In Warwick, you can head to Oakland Beach to watch the show over Narragansett Bay starting around 9 p.m.

Fireworks in Bristol harbor and at Pierce Stadium in east providence will start at 9:30 p.m.
