A woman in New Bedford tells ABC6 News that she was approached outside her home by a man claiming to be a state trooper. The altercation happened Monday evening while the woman was trying to swap spots in the drive way with her husband.

The woman says the man in the vehicle behind her on Clifford St got out and started yelling. He then allegedly showed her a badge identifying himself as a state trooper from the Dartmouth barracks before he tapped his hip where a gun would be.

Still the woman’s gut told her the man in the black Ford wasn’t who he claimed to be. She somehow kept her cool and memorized his license plate number to give to police.

The ordeal was over in a matter of minutes. The driver and his passenger took off when her husband came out.

Impersonating a police officer is punishable by a fine or up to 1 year in jail.

There is no word from New Bedford police on any suspects or arrests.
