New Bedford woman dies from injuries sustained in house fire

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services said a New Bedford woman died from her injuries sustained in a house fire on Oct. 9.

New Bedford firefighters responded to a multi-family home on Elm Street around 8:30 p.m. for reports of a fire with residents trapped inside.

Upon arrival, crews discovered fire on the second floor and heavy smoke on the second and third floor.

Firefighters began to attack the fire and search for residents inside the home, where they found a woman in her 70s on the third floor.

She was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, and later transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Officials said the woman’s identity is being withheld at this time.

According to the preliminary investigation, the fire does not appear the be suspicious.

Nearly a dozen residents are without a home due to the fire.

The Red Cross is assisting the residents.

The exact origin and cause of the fire is under investigation.
