New England Patriots introduce Jerod Mayo as new head coach

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (WLNE) — The New England Patriots officially introduced Jerod Mayo as their new head coach on Wednesday.

Mayo and team owner Robert Kraft spoke at a media briefing at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.

“Becoming a Patriot, it’s never really felt like a job,” Mayo said.

When asked about the search for an offensive coordinator, Mayo said “everything’s still under consideration.”

“Obviously, the staff that I’ve been working with isn’t the staff that I’ve chosen. One thing I will say, with all of my coaches, the number one thing is developing people,” he said.

He said he will maintain a compassionate approach, getting to know his staff as well as assessing their competency.

The team announced Mayo as the new coach one day after Bill Belichick said he was parting ways with New England after 24 seasons.

Belichick and the Patriots organization amicably decided to move on after a mutual agreement.

Rumors about either Mayo or Mike Vrabel, who was recently fired as coach of the Tennessee Titans, succeeding Belichick started last year.

Mayo is a former Patriots player who has served as a linebackers coach since 2019.

Mayo will be the 15th head coach in the history of the Patriots, and also the youngest head coach in the NFL at age 37.

Fans are also still eyeing what’s next for Belichick.

The Atlanta Falcons posted on social media Monday that the team interviewed Belichick for their open head coaching position.
