The state of Rhode Island will be seeing some new equipment when they walk into the voting booth this year.

Rhode Island is buying five-hundred-ninety new electronic voting machines that will be used for the fall elections.

The new voting equipment replaces machines from the 1990s.

It still uses paper ballots, but voters will now have to fill in ovals instead of connecting arrows.

Towns will also be getting new printers allowing poll workers to print ballots if they run out on the day of the election.

The state is joining 30 other states with the program.

Voters can now register to vote from a computer or even a phone.

The state is hoping the process will make it easier for voters, encouraging them to go out and vote.

“Online voter registration seems simple but it’s gonna make this so much more accessible for people to vote and that’s exactly what we need to do.”
