New Rhode Island law allows some 17-year-olds to vote in Presidential Primary
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – A new law will allow some 17-year-olds the chance to cast a ballot for their preferred candidate in Rhode Island’s primary election.
Secretary of State Gregg Amore says 17-year-olds who will be 18 by Election Day can vote in the Rhode Island Presidential Preference Primary to determine the candidates in the general election.
“This legislation empowers young Rhode Islanders to get involved with their democracy even sooner,” Amore said.
Officials say March 3 is the deadline to register to vote and update voter information, including party affiliation, if needed, to participate in the primary election.
Teens must turn 18 by the Nov. 5, 2024 presidential election in order to be eligible for the Presidential Preference Primary on April 2, 2024.
“I hope these newly eligible voters will take advantage of this opportunity to participate,” Amore added.
Eligible Rhode Islanders can pre-register to vote starting at age 16 at the RI Division of Motor Vehicles, online at vote.ri.gov, or by signing and returning a paper form to their local board of canvassers.
