New school year set to begin for students in Rhode Island and Mass.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Many students across the Ocean State are heading back to school for the 2024-2025 school year.

Five districts are looking ahead to their first day of school tomorrow, with dozens of more set to open up over the next few days.

But even as school returns, some districts are looking at staggered starts for different grades.

To kick things off, Smithfield, Lincoln, West Warwick, and East Greenwich all begin the school year on Tuesday.

North Providence will also open up for Pre-K through 9th grade tomorrow, with 10th through 12th grade starting on Wednesday.

Wednesday sees the first day for a few dozen additional districts across Rhode Island and Massachusetts, including New Bedford, Taunton, East Providence, and Coventry.

To wrap up this week, a handful of districts will kick off the school year on Thursday, including Cranston, Warwick, Pawtucket, Easton, Tiverton, and Westport.

After that most districts will get into the year by next week, with the latest start in our coverage area beginning on September 5.
