Frank Hanan and his dog Bodie spend a lot of time at the fields on High Street in North Attleboro. The city man was shocked when he came across a huge mess towards the end of last week. Someone had driven onto the soccer fields, which the city just paid $300,000 to spruce up. The grass was torn up from donuts before even a single game could be played on it.
“I don’t know what people get stuff like that. Definitely irritating,” said Hanan.
Hanan says he called police to report the damage, which is estimated to be in the $6,000 range.
“The ground was pretty hard. There were some spots where they did sharp turns and it went in and rutted, but I think the other stuff is probably superficial,” said Hanan.
There is a rock wall barrier that goes all around the field, but the culprit found a spot just wide enough for a car to sneak through.
“Maybe, if they have to they should put some fencing around it. Maybe that wouldn’t be a bad idea, but yeah, it’s too bad,” said Steven Russo who walks his dog at the park.
The cities Parks and Recreation Department has already placed a telephone poll in front of the entrance, hoping to deter anyone else from vandalizing the property, or the culprits from returning.
“I wish the young kids if they are listening that they would think about what they are doing before they act,” said Russo.
The field will have to be re–seeded and leveled, but it is not expected to impact the grand opening this April.
