The Newport City Council is looking to save the seasonal ice rink for the 2014-15 season after the Newport Yachting Center announced it is closing.

The rink has been housed at the yachting center in Commercial Wharf but with the recent sale of the venue it will no longer host the rink. As a result, City Councilors Kate Leonard and Michael Farley have decided to look to a public-private partnership in order to save the rink.

According to the councilors two possible benefactors have been located.

A resolution introduced by the councilors last night is asking the administration to identify city-owned properties in which the skating rink could be relocated.

On November 12, a written report of city-owned location that’s could be used as a venue is set to be turned into the council.
