Newport County YMCA reopens after sauna incident

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — The Newport County YMCA reopened Sunday after an incident at the sauna on June 15 injured a woman.

One of the facility’s saunas was malfunctioning, and when its door was opened, the excessive steam triggered the sprinkler system.

The women’s locker room, downstairs bathrooms, and the spin room will remain closed as a restoration company will be assessing water damage over the coming days.

“Due to the closing of the women’s locker room we ask that you use the universal locker room,” the facility said. “Both steam rooms will be closed until further notice as we determine the cause of the incident.”

The woman who was involved in the incident suffered minor non-life threatening injuries.
