NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority restored access to the Newport Pell and Jamestown-Verrazzano bridges.

Access was closed through Monday morning due to high-speed winds.

For a few hours, only automobiles, pickup trucks, flatbed trailers, and commercial buses were able to cross both bridges. The agency initially said only house trailers, RVs, empty enclosed trailers would be prohibited to cross.

According to RITBA protocol, restrictions come into effect with wind speeds or wind gusts exceeding 50 miles per hour for at least 15 minutes or more.
