Newport resident struck and killed by car while walking in crosswalk

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — A 52-year-old resident died last night after being struck by a car while walking in a crosswalk on Broadway at Bedlow Avenue in Newport, according to police.

The victim was crossing the street at approximately 10:23 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle driven by a 56-year-old local resident.

He was transported to the hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The Newport Police Department said they are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Officials said the 56-year-old resident was cited for Right of Way in Crosswalk (first offense) and Operating without Evidence of Insurance, but no criminal charges have been filed at this point in time.

The victim and operator’s identities have not been released, as police are actively attempting to notify next of kin.
