The Teacher’s Association of Newport (TAN) rejects a school committee’s proposal in a meeting Friday night.
About 90 teachers voted ‘no confidence’ in their Superintendent Colleen Jermain in a meeting due to over crowded classrooms and not abiding by contracts.
The teachers say they have been working on an expired contract for about a year and say not enough is being done.
The proposal was rejected because increasing class sizes would mean that teachers are not as available to students, the students would receive less personal lessons, less one on one help and less time for the teacher to review work.
Also, it was rejected because settling on a contract on the withdrawal of grievances is an unjust labor practice. TAN says they will file an Unfair Labor Practice charge on August 31st with the State Labor Relations Board.
