Newport to hold rally for endangered hospital birthing center

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — Aquidneck Island residents are planning a rally to show support for the birthing center at Newport Hospital.

It follows a July 15 resolution passed by Newport City Council urging Brown Health not to cut the center as it’s the only one of its kind on the island.

In response, Brown University Health said they were looking forward to working with city council but could not say if the center was off the chopping block.

Proponents for the center will meet at the Newport City Hall for a rally.

Among the speakers is Rhode Island House Speaker Joseph Shekarchi.

That rally is set for 6 Tuesday night.
