PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Nordstrom announced plans to close its store in the Providence Place Mall in a press release posted Tuesday morning.

According to the release, the Providence Place Mall location, which first opened in August of 1999, will close its doors to customers January 4, 2019.

The department store is working with about 187 employees that will be impacted by the closure to discuss next steps.

“The decision to close a store is always a tough one for us because we know it impacts both our customers and our employees,” said Nordstrom President, Jamie Nordstrom. “We’ve been fortunate to serve customers here for nearly 20 years and have built meaningful relationships with our customers and community in that time.”

The closure of the Providence Place Mall store will not affect the Nordstrom Rack at the Warwick Mall, which will remain open.

According to a spokesperson for the mall, the department store Boscov’s will replace Nordstrom’s spot in the mall. It will be the first Boscov’s location in Rhode Island.

The last major chain to close in the mall was J.C. Penney in 2015.
