Sept. 29 – – As she headed toward the finish line at Saturday's sixth annual Ocean State Cross Country Invitational at Goddard Park, Aisha Mc Adams could see the numbers on the digital clock ticking relentlessly toward 19 minutes. She was determined that her final time remain inside the 18-minute range. It was mission accomplished as the North Kingstown senior sprinted the final 50 yards and hit the tape in 18 minutes, 58 seconds to place third overall in the Championship Division 3.1-miler.
In doing so, Mc Adams finished first among Rhode Islanders who were entered in the meet's highlight race. She also placed third at the 2011 Championship race (as the first Rhode Island finisher), but in a slower 19:05.
“This is a big race, not just a tempo run'' said Mc Adams, a second-team All-Stater last year. “I saw the clock, and I wanted to break 19 [minutes]. I was happy to come in the top three. I was shooting for the top five [finishers].''
Mc Adams answered the gun quickly, and staked out her spot at the two-mile mark on a 6:06 pace. The girls' Championship Division was won by Greenwich (Conn.) Central's Madeline Montague in 18:30. Anne Johnston, of Darien, Conn., came in second (18:49).
Coventry High sisters Allison and Jessica Bellows were respective second and third Rhode Island finishers in the Championship race. Allison clocked in at 19:34, with Jessica one second behind.
                                            Smith: First boy for R.I.
Last year, Skipper Dallin Smith crossed the boys' Championship Division finish line as the first local runner. He was 30th overall in 17:09. The junior harrier was again first Rhode Islander to finish the Championship run Saturday, but this time was seventh overall in 16:39. St. John Prep's Jon Green captured the boys' event in 15:29.
Teammate Joe Craven was No. 2 for the state, placing 16th overall in 17:01. In fact, the Skippers took all 10 Rhode Island spots within the Championship race's 61-runner field, and placed fourth in team scoring.
“Coach told me to take it out in the end,'' said Smith. “And I like this course. I like flat courses. Ive been running hard this season.''
                                              It's Burr all the way
Jackie Burr is working on joining the storied tradition of Westerly High's female harriers. On Saturday, the Bulldog junior cruised to a winning (and personal best) 19:03 in the girls' Varsity I Division 3.1 mile race. Running on a 6:08 average, Burr was 39 seconds ahead of second-place Vicky Hathaway, of Stillwater High.
“I've been training hard,'' said Burr, who last year here finished fifth in the same race. “I've been working hard, mentally and physically. I started off strong [today], picked my position. I love this course; the trail runs, the music.''
“She came out for us and won the Freshman States,'' said Mary-Ann Janiszewski. “Shes very disciplined in her training.''
Course Notes: The RIIL dual meet season concludes this week.
