Suspect identified in North Providence shooting

NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – North Providence police are investigating an alleged drive by shooting that happened on Joseph St. Thursday afternoon.
Authorities responded to a disturbance call around 2 p.m. Officers found Luis Veras, 29, with apparent gunshot wounds to the hand and leg.
The suspect has been identified as Melvin Fermin Jimenez, 21.
North Providence police believe Jimenez and two others, driving a silver Honda Accord, went to Joseph St. to confront Vera and a woman he was with. Jimenez then shot Veras from inside the vehicle and drove off.
Police say Jimenez and Veras know each other, and this is an isolated incident.
Veras was transported to Rhode Island Hospital. Authorities say he is in stable condition and is alert and responsive.
The incident is under investigation. Authorities say there is no threat to the public.
