The sound of gun fire rips through a typically quiet neighborhood in Norton. A suspect barricaded himself inside a home for hours, firing round after round at police.

The standoff finally ended when that man was found dead from a gun shot wound. Investigators are now trying to figure out if police shot him or he killed himself.

For police, it all started with what seemed like a typical domestic disturbance call. But there was nothing routine about what happened next.

First, there was screaming.

"I was in my studio upstairs doing some stuff and I heard screaming coming from the next street over,” one neighbor explained.

"She was screaming for a few minutes before she actually said someone call the police someone call 911,” said Brandon Depierro who lives across the street.

Then gunshots.

"They just came right in succession. Boom, boom all four of them,” said Dave Thompson, a neighbor.

That was the scene at 25 Azalea Road in Norton Saturday night. A next-door neighbor looked out his bathroom window to try and figure out just what was going on.

"I did see a man it looked like he was wearing a red shirt kind of running around frantically in the kitchen and living room area,” a neighbor said.

What he didn’t know was that he was looking at 48-year-old Kevin Murray who had just gotten into a violent fight with his girlfriend, causing her to run from her home and scream for help.

"It was reported to police that a male subject inside of the residence was attempting to gain access to a safe that contained a handgun,” said North Police Chief Brian Clark.

While Murray was trying to get the gun that did not belong to him, police were on their way. But by the time they got there, he had successfully accessed a five shot .38 revolver.

"When officers approached the residence, they were fired upon through the entry door with a window. An officer immediately returned fire,” Clark said.

SWAT, along with several other agencies, filled up the typically quiet neighborhood and evacuated several homes.

"When they took us out the house they took us all to Reservoir Street and just put us on a bus and we just kind of hung tight there,” Depierro said.

Officers then heard another shot fired inside the house. Upon entry, they found Murray dead from an apparent gunshot wound. Police don’t know if it came from them or him. An autopsy is being done to determine how Murray died.

olice say the woman had visible injuries but wasn’t hospitalized and no officers were injured. The woman’s brother tells ABC6 that the two had been dating for about six months.
