The number of homeless people in the United States has dropped slightly since last year., according to a report by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The survey was taken during last week of January and found that nearly 565,000 people were homeless. That’s down 2% from the last year. More than 47 thousand of them were veterans.

HUD also reports that homelessness has fallen 13.3 percent in Rhode Island since 2010. Communities in Rhode Island reported that 1,111 people were homeless in January 2015.

The results of the report are based on HUD’s "point-in-time" estimates, which measures the scope of homelessness on a single night in January each year.
