Ocean technology and sustainability at center of Blue Innovation Symposium
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLEN) — Wednesday, Governor Dan McKee joined more than 400 experts at the Blue Innovation Symposium, a three-day event meant to highlight the latest advancements in ocean technology and sustainability.
“The marine operation center out in Newport that’s under construction right now, hundreds of jobs for the people who are building these things. It’s just so important that we’re going to continue to invest in our plan,” said Governor McKee.
When the governor and other state leaders talk about the blue economy, they’re talking about using the Ocean State’s rich resources to build the economy, while keeping an eye on the environment too.
Canada’s Consul General in Boston Bernadette Jordan was in Middletown Wednesday, sharing a bright outlook for that work.
“The ocean economy is not only expected to outpace the growth of the broader economy by 20 percent by 2030, but it’s estimated that up to 35 percent of our emissions reductions required by 2050 can be achieved through the ocean,” said Jordan.
“Our oceans hold immense potential to combat climate change and drive sustainable economic growth.”
The symposium continues through Thursday.
