Officials charge suspect after months-long investigation into Smithfield jewelry theft

Police arrested a suspect in the theft of jewelry from a vehicle outside Dave's Marketplace last November (WLNE)

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — A months-long investigation into the theft of over a million dollars of jewelry in Smithfield came to a head Saturday.

Officials arrested 25-year-old Sergio Castaneda Ronderos of East Elmhurst, N.Y. and assigned him a litany of charges related to a larceny on Nov. 1, 2023.

Smithfield police said a person claimed gemstones and jewelry were taken from their vehicle parked at Dave’s Marketplace on Putnam Pike last November.

An investigation determined over $1M worth of jewelry was stolen in the incident.

Authorities said Smithfield Police Detectives and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) conducted the investigation leading to Castaneda Ronderos’ arrest.

Castaneda Ronderos was charged with felony larceny over $1,500 dollars, felony conspiracy to commit larceny and malicious damage, according to Smithfield police.

He was arraigned by a bail commissioner but held by a United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer after posting bail on Sunday.
