Officials confirm additional cases of West Nile, Eastern Equine Encephalitis

CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Management and the Rhode Island Department of Health has announced additional findings of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and West Nile Virus (WNV).
Both findings, according to officials, were tested from mosquitos in Cumberland.
The results are from 87 samples collected from 30 traps set statewide by DEM on September 12 and 19.
Additionally the probable case of WVN last week was confirmed to be positive.
The total count of WNV is four, with three confirmed cases and one probable case.
“RIDOH and DEM are reminding the public that it is a particularly active mosquito season in Southern New England and that mosquito testing and recent human cases of both EEE virus and WNV indicate a high risk level statewide,” officials said in a statement.
