Officials identify Yarmouth trench collapse victim as Fall River man

YARMOUTH, Mass. (WLNE) — The Town of Yarmouth has identified the victim in the deadly trench collapse in Yarmouth on Nov. 18.

According to the Town of Yarmouth, 61-year-old Miguel Reis, of Fall River, was killed after a trench collapsed at a sewer construction site.

Firefighters responded to the construction site on South Shore Drive around 8:50 a.m. for reports of three people trapped in a trench.

One person was able to escape prior to the fire department’s arrival.

Firefighters discovered two people were trapped and began rescue operations.

Around 1:20 p.m., crews were able to free one person, who was taken to Rhode Island Hospital via Medflight.

The other trapped individual, identified as Reis, died from his injuries, according to officials.

He was removed from the trench around 2:45 p.m.

Massachusetts State Police and the United States Department of Labor Standards Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the collapse.
