One dead, another in critical condition after Woonsocket shooting

WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — The Woonsocket Police Department said one person is dead and another seriously hurt after a shooting Tuesday afternoon.

Police responded to reports of a shooting at a mixed-use apartment building near the Stadium Theatre on Main Street just before 5 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found a 32-year-old man on the second floor who had been shot, according to police.

Officers learned the shooting suspect was a 57-year-old man, and found out that both men lived in the building.

Police went to the third floor and spoke with the suspect through a locked door, attempting to get him to surrender peacefully.

Officials said, after a brief conversation, police heard a gunshot and forced their way into the room, where they discovered the man had shot himself.

The 32-year-old victim was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries, but was stable as of Tuesday night, according to police.

Officials said the 57-year-old shooting suspect was taken to Landmark Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Initial investigation showed the two men knew each other and had a argument before the shooting.

The Woonsocket Police Department is investigating the incident.

Police are not releasing the identities of the men at this time.
