One person in critical condition, West Greenwich auto shop total loss after fire
WEST GREENWICH, R.I. (WLNE) — A 79-year-old man is in critical condition this afternoon after an overnight fire at Simpson’s Auto Care in West Greenwich.
According to the West Greenwich police chief, the fire was reported by police officer, sergeant Biagio Longo, who happened to be driving down route 3 and spotted smoke.
After calling firefighters, Sergeant Longoo jumped into action rescuing the man from an apartment on the second floor.
Police chief Richard Ramsay said the man is at Rhode Island Hospital with 62-percent of his body covered in burns.
He remains in critical condition.
The department of environmental management was also on hand to make sure there aren’t any exposed hazardous materials.
The shop is a total loss as the roof and the left side of the building collapsed.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
