One taken into custody after multiple ‘smash and grabs’ in North Kingstown

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — A man was taken into custody after North Kingstown Police said a total of four businesses were broken into this morning.

Police responded to the Five Below store on Gate Road for a reported breaking and entering in progress.

Upon arrival, officers found the front window of the business to be smashed and the cash register missing.

In speaking to a witness, officers said they learned that the suspect was driving a black SUV, which had fled the scene.

While investigating, officers found a vehicle on Post Road matching the vehicle’s description.

The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled.

The black SUV was located crashed into a AMTRAK Building located at 912 Ten Rod Road, unoccupied, a short time later.

The crash knocked out power to the surrounding area due to it having struck an electrical guidewire.

During the search of the scene, the RI State Police located a male subject a short distance away from the crash who refused to identify
himself or answer questions.

The male subject was ultimately taken into custody for obstruction and transported to the North Kingstown Police Department.

As a result of this investigation, the North Kingstown Police had a total of four businesses broken into during the early morning hours.

The businesses are as follows:
• Five Below 86 Gate Road
• Yorktown Market 6769 Post Road
• Smoxy Smoke Shop 6172 Post Road
• Kingstown Mobile Gas Station 6228 Post Road

The incident is currently under investigation by the North Smithfield Police Department.
