A massive embezzlement case is set to begin Wednesday in Washington County Court. The man at the center of the investigation is accused of stealing over a million dollars.
The suspect, 67-year-old Dan Doyle, is proclaiming his innocence and will now have his day in court.
The Rhode Island Attorney Generals Office has been preparing for this case for the last three years. Now with jury selection finalized, opening statements will begin Wednesday morning.
In 2013, Dan Doyle was arrested on 18 criminal charges including embezzlement and forgery.
He is accused of stealing over a million dollars from the Institute of International Sport, a state run agency Doyle founded. However, he maintains he did nothing wrong.
Prosecutors allege Doyle took the money through salary increases and personal expenses.
His attorney is fighting back by filing a motion to dismiss. In the meantime, Doyle has maintained his innocence since day one.
“I will not leave this planet until my name is cleared. As in completely cleared. And I will not leave this planet until the individuals behind this are held fully accountable.”
However, the Attorney General’s office feels they have a strong case against the 67-year-old.
The trial is expected to last anywhere between two and four months.
