Opening statements to begin in Trump trial
MANHANTTAN, N.Y., (WLNE) — Today, the first-ever criminal trial of a former President will be heard.
Prosecutors will set out to prove former President Donald Trump falsified business records to keep an adult film star’s claim of an affair from damaging his electoral prospects.
The jury of 7 men and 5 women were selected from a pool of 200 New York residents. Among the witnesses for the prosecution is former National Enquirer Publisher David Pecker, who agreed to be the eyes and ears of Trump’s 2016 campaign.
The trial centers on the $130,000 payment that Trump’s former lawyer made to Daniels to prevent her claims of a sexual encounter with Trump from becoming public. He could get up to four years in prison if convicted, and Trump has insisted he will testify in his trial.
Trump is currently involved in four criminal cases.
