Over 40 firefighters battle fire at New Bedford transfer station

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — Over 40 New Bedford firefighters battled a fire at the New Bedford Recycling Center on Shawmut Avenue Wednesday night.

According to the New Bedford Fire Department, crews responded to reports of a fire in the back of the building.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered black smoke and heavy flames extending out of the building.

Officials said the roof was compromised, and the fire spread rapidly in the building due to the combustibles inside.

All workers were accounted for, and nobody was injured.

Officials said the fire was “very manpower intensive” and required mutual aid.

Crews are expected to stay on scene for the night.

The cause of the fire appears to be accidental, according to the New Bedford Fire Department.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
