PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Over 700 “Letters of Action” were inadvertently sent to vehicle owners from the DMV stating that they did not have passing inspection records.

The letters came with a “pending suspension” warning if the owners didn’t provide proof that the vehicle met inspection standards.

According to Paul Grimaldi, the mistake was a timing issue.

A vendor who helps the DMV track and manage suspension filings is responsible for generating notices to vehicle owners and drivers.

The vendor transmitted a file with a list of current suspension notices into the old computer system prior to the switchover to the new system.

It sent a list of vehicles with up-to-date inspections after the new system went live

That created a lag that wouldn’t otherwise have happened in the old system and won’t in the new system now that RIMS is the sole operating system.

A file that was once regularly sent from a vendor to the DMV in one way through one system at one time, was sent to the DMV prior to the switchover.
The vendor updated that file after the switchover.

That disconnect in timing cause the generation and mailing of notices to 739 people.

Those people are being notified that the notices were sent incorrectly and that their records are up-to-date.
