Overdose medication available at lower cost in Rhode Island

A life-saving drug used to reverse opioid overdoses is now available to Rhode Island schools, law enforcement agencies and other non-federal government and community agencies at a reduced price.

Attorney General Peter Kilmartin announced Tuesday that he’s reached an agreement with the manufacturer of naloxone to increase the company-offered rebate for each syringe form of the drug from $4 to $6 per dose.

The rebate is retroactive for purchases made on or after Oct. 1.

Kilmartin’s office will process all rebate requests. The Cumberland and Pawtucket school departments as well as the Compass School in Kingston have already submitted rebate requests.

Gov. Gina Raimondo’s budget proposal includes $40,000 for the purchase of naloxone, often sold under the brand name Narcan, through the program.
