Norfolk, VA. – The Providence Bruins defeatd the Norfolk
Admirals 5-4 Friday night at the Norfolk
Scope. Providence got goals from Matt Fraser, Carter Camper, Bobby Robins,
Matthew Lindblad, and Ryan Spooner.
Both Providence and Norfolk struggled to find some consistent play early on in
the first period. Fraser opened the
scoring at the 12:48 mark of the first period, off of a centering pass from Nick Johnson. Fraser outdueled the Norfolk defender for the
one-timer goal. Two and half minutes
later, Carter Camper put the P-Bruins
up by 2 on the power play, depositing a loose puck into the net. Thirty seconds later, Bobby Robins picked up a loose puck in-front of the net and
backhanded the puck into the net for a 3-0 Bruins lead at the 15:48 mark of the
1st period. Providence
outshot Norfolk 13-7 after the 1st.
The P-Bruins came out strong to start the second period but were unable to
extend their three goal lead. Devante Smith-Pelly made it 3-1 on the
power play 6:21 into the 2nd period. Following the goal, the teams
started exchanging opportunities but were unable to change the score. Shots were 29-19 in favor of Providence after
two periods.
In the third period, Lindblad scored his third goal of the year, 2:48 into the
period, to extend the P-Bruins lead back to three. Antoine
Laganiere scored eight minutes later to give Norfolk some hope in coming
back into the game. Three minutes later Steven Whitney scored his sixth of the
season to cut the lead to 4-3.
Whitney
hopped on a loose puck, in the slot, and wristed a shot by Niklas Svedberg. Ryan Spooner got a bit of luck a minute
later, as the puck fell to his stick and he was able to beat a sprawling John Gibson to increase the P-Bruins
lead back to two.
With under five
minutes to play, the game looked all but over, until Jesse Blacker was able to get his point shot through all the bodies
in-front of Svedberg. Norfolk had 40
seconds to try and tie the game up but Svedberg and the P-Bruins shut the door.
Svedberg stopped 26 of 30 shots for the P-Bruins, while Gibson made 30 saves
for the Admirals. Providence went
1-for-3 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
