P-Bruins Lose in Shootout at Portland

P-Bruins news release…

Lewiston, ME – The Providence Bruins fell to the Portland Pirates Wednesday night 4-3 in a shootout.  Ben Youds, Joe Morrow, and David Warsofsky scored for the P-Bruins in regulation, while Malcolm Subban recorded 31 saves in the shootout loss.

In the opening period, the P-Bruins started firing shots from all angles and distances on the Pirates net and Portland goalie Mark Visentin was coming up with the saves until Youds wristed home the opening goal at the 10:26 mark.  Justin Florek and Craig Cunningham assisted on Youds' first goal of the season.

Just over a minute later, Providence extended their lead to two as Morrow found the top corner of the net for his third goal of the season.  Matt Lindblad and Youds picked up the assists on the power play goal.

It looked like it was going to be a 2-0 lead heading into the 1st intermission, but Daine Todd deflected a shot through Subban with 5 seconds remaining in the period.  It was Todd's first goal of the season and came on the power play.  Brendan Shinnimin and Tobias Rieder had the assists as Providence took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

The P-Bruins responded to start the second period scoring at the 5:26 mark.  Warsofsky slapped home the third goal of the game for the P-Bruins, his second goal of the season.  Zach Trotman slid the puck across the blue line to Warsofsky, who settled the puck and fired it off the post and into the net.

Cunningham grabbed the second assist.  Portland showed their resiliency, scoring at the 9:15 mark as Lucas Lessio beat Subban for his fifth goal of the season.  Andy Miele and Brandon Gormley had the assists.  Providence led 3-2 going into the second intermission.

The third period was about defense for the P-Bruins with conservative hockey as they tried to come out with the road victory, but the Pirates continued putting pressure on Subban and the Providence defense.

Portland tied the game at the 14:14 mark off a goal mouth scramble, as Shinnimin stuffed home the puck.  Brandon Yip and Lessio had the assists as the game went to overtime tied at three.

In overtime, Portland was on the power play for almost three and half minutes, but was unable to score.  In the shootout, Providence was kept off the scoreboard, while Miele and Brandon McMillan tallied for the Pirates as Portland went onto the 4-3 shootout victory.

Subban stopped 31 of 34 shots in regulation and 2 of 4 shots in the shootout for the P-Bruins, while Mark Visentin made 28 saves in regulation and four saves in the shootout for the Pirates.  Providence went 1-for-4 on the power play and was 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.

Providence is back in action at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Friday, December 13 at 7:05pm against the Pirates.
