Passenger recounts Delta plane crash at Toronto Pearson Airport
TORONTO (WLNE) — Officials said there were no fatalities when a Delta flight from Minneapolis crash landed in Toronto on Monday.
80 people were on board the plane that crashed at Toronto Pearson International Airport.
Of the 76 passengers and four crews members, just 17 were injured, and nobody was killed.
“Airport emergency workers mounted a textbook response, reaching the site within minutes and quickly evacuating the passengers,” Toronto Pearson President, CEO Deborah Flint said.
One passenger, John Nelson, captured footage after his flight crash-landed in Toronto.
“When we hit, it was just a super hard landing, hit the ground, and the plane went sideways,” Nelson said. “I believe we skidding on our side and then flipped over on our back.”
All traffic from Pearson Airport was halted after the crash around 2:30 p.m.
Radio transmission captured the hectic calls shutting down runways, and witnesses caught video of the plane resting on its roof after the crash.
Nelson said it was a race to get off the plane.
“Everyone was just like ‘get out, get out, get out,’ we could smell jet fuel,” Nelson said. “Then we crawled out the back of the airplane, the firefighters and EMTs were there right away.”
The investigation is in its early stages, but Nelson believed weather may have been a factor.
“I did notice that the winds were super gusty,” Nelson said. “The snow had blown over the runways.”
Nevertheless, he expressed he’s just happy to be alive.
“It’s amazing that we’re still here,” Nelson said.
Traffic resumed at Pearson Airport around 5 p.m.
Officials said the runways near the crash site will remain closed for at least a few days for the investigation.
