Patriots hire Jerod Mayo to succeed Belichick, reports
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (WLNE) — The New England Patriots wasted no time replacing Bill Belichick, with reports saying that Jerod Mayo will take over as the team’s head coach Friday.
According to reports, Mayo will now run the sidelines for the Patriots just one day after Belichick and the team parted ways.
At 37, Mayo will be the youngest head coach in the NFL.
Mayo was a linebacker for the Patriots for eight seasons after being drafted in the first round in 2008, 10th overall.
Mayo is a Super Bowl Champion, on the roster for the 2014 Patriots team that won in dramatic fashion over the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX.
He is also a two-time Pro Bowler and was 2008 Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Mayo has served as the Patriots’ linebackers coach since 2019.
A fellow former Pats linebacker-turned coach Mike Vrabel was apparently passed over for the Patriots head coach job.
Vrabel was considered a possible Belichick replacement in some circles, according to ESPN reports.
