WORCESTER, Mass. (WLNE) – Pawtucket Red Sox ownership announced plans to move the team to Worcester Friday afternoon.

The team confirmed Friday that it had signed a letter of intent to build a stadium in downtown Worcester for the 2021 season.

At a press conference at Worcester City Hall, city officials confirmed the team’s plans to relocate the team, and elaborated on a large-scale revitalization of the city’s infrastructure, specifically in the Canal District.

PawSox officials confirmed that a letter was delivered Friday morning to Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien’s office, and Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo said she expected to hear from the team personally Friday afternoon.

Governor Raimondo is expected to make further comments on the team’s decision in a press conference at 5:30 p.m. Friday evening.
