PawSox Have the Wright Stuff in Beating the Chiefs at McCoy

PawSox news release…

(Pawtucket, RI) – Steven Wright threw seven shutout innings to lead the Pawtucket Red Sox to a series-clinching 4-0 win over the Syracuse Chiefs on Thursday afternoon at McCoy Stadium.  Wright was backed by a pair of solo home runs and spearheaded Pawtucket’s third win of a four-game series in 2015.

Wright (1-1), pitching on a full week of rest, breezed for most of the day; he fanned seven and only had one inning in which more than one man reached base.  The knuckleballer allowed only four hits and became the third Pawtucket starter in 2015 to pitch through the seventh inning.

The PawSox (14-8) got all the offense they would need in the very first inning.  Travis Shaw blasted his first homer of the year to deep right-center field off of Syracuse starter Scott McGregor.

Pawtucket tacked on two more in the fourth.  Bryce Brentz led off the inning with a double to left field, his seventh two-base hit of the season.  Brentz moved to third on a groundout and scored on Luke Montz’s sacrifice fly.  Deven Marrero then belted his second homer, a solo shot that pushed Pawtucket ahead 3-0.

Shaw plated the Sox’ final run of the day with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.  After Sean Coyle drew a leadoff walk, Quintin Berry singled to left.  Blake Swihart walked for the second time in the game to load the bases.  Facing a two-strike count, Shaw ripped a liner to right to score Coyle.

Zeke Spruill pitched the last two innings for Pawtucket; he allowed only two hits and struck out one.

The PawSox welcome the Durham Bulls to McCoy Stadium for the first of a four-game series Friday night at 6:15 P.M.  Matt Barnes(0-0, 5.63) will take the ball for Pawtucket; Durham has not yet announced a starter. Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:00 pm.
