Pawtucket, Central Falls helping underserved & undocumented families

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (WLNE) — Pawtucket and Central Falls have been teaming up to help low-income and minority resident amid the pandemic.

A new community hotline was launched Friday morning to help connect residents to doctors, who can help them get information on where to get tested, how to safely isolate, and how to overcome hardships related to the coronavirus.

The community hotline number is 855-643-7620.

The cities are also the recipient of a $170,000 grant, funded by the Rhode Island Foundation, United Way, and other donors, aimed at helping undocumented families.

“I’m really appreciative because these are human beings who don’t have the ability to collect unemployment or receive any type of stimulus money,” said Central Falls mayor, James Diossa.

The money is being distributed by the non-profit organizations Progreso Latino and  Fuerza Laboral. The idea came from state senator, Sandra Cano of Pawtucket.

“The funding is limited,” explained Mario Bueno, CEO of Progreso Latino. “Therefore we want to help those who are most in need.”

Undocumented residents of Pawtucket and Central Falls can collect up $500 to help with rent, bills, and groceries.

Individuals in need can call 401-727-7474.
