Nothing will warm up a chilly, snowy winter day like the thought of baseball returning in springtime.

But outside McCoy Stadium there are growing questions about whether new owners will move the team.

The Martel family lives right near McCoy, and would be heartbroken,

“There’s going to be a lot of people that are going to be depressed. It’s their home field. It’s what Pawtucket‘s known for really,” said Kevin Martel, a long time Paw Sox fan.

Fans are hoping local and state leaders can convince the team to stay.

ABC6 Chief Political Reporter Mark Curtis said, “One of the ideas, being kicked around is to develop the area around McCoy Stadium. Perhaps adding restaurants and shopping, creating something like a mini–Patriot’s Place.”

That concept has been very successful near Gillette Stadium.

Now the Pawtucket City Council has formed an economic development committee, to see what impact the Paw Sox have on the local economy.

“We certainly know they bring a lot of people that go to the games, but if we were to develop something Downtown, would those people go Downtown to restaurants and things like that, so we’ve never really done a full–fledged economic market analysis and I’d like to see if something like that could be done,” said City Council President David Moran

The city has reached out to the Paw Sox, but since the team has not been officially sold, no one is talking.

“Really the word that we have gotten back is that negotiations are ongoing, and that when they’re ready to speak and go public with this, then they’ll be in communication with us,” said Tony Pires, Pawtucket Director of Administration.

Knowledgeable sources tell ABC6 the new owners may want millions from the General Assembly for stadium renovations, as an incentive to stay in Rhode Island.
