Pawtucket couple killed in targeted shooting in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Pawtucket couple was shot to death in a car in Providence early Saturday.

The Providence Police Department provided an update Monday after a weekend of violence, saying it believes both parents were targeted.

Chief Oscar Perez and Maj. David Lapatin said the young couple was shot to death in a car on Hathaway Street, which is on the Cranston line.

Cranston police found the 29-year-old man and 30-year-old woman dead after a call for shots fired around 12:05 a.m. They turned the case over to Providence police when they realized it was over the town line.

“Someone in the neighborhood said they heard shots fired and a car speeding away Cranston arrived first, they discovered a car with two bodies inside,” Major David Lapatin said.

The man was in the driver’s seat and the car was parked.

Authorities said the couple was targeted. Police do not believe it was a drive-by shooting.

The couple was from Pawtucket.

They were parents to four children, two of which they had together. It was unclear if they were married.

“This was a targeted case and we’ll continue to police this city in a constitutional manner and we will do everything we can to make sure criminals those who want to commit violent crime are held responsible,” Perez said.

The double homicide remains under investigation.
