Pawtucket, R.I. — Pawtucket public schools will be in session Friday morning after all.
An Agreement was reached Thursday afternoon in an effort to prevent a one day strike the school lunch workers had planned for Friday. The strike would have forced administrators to cancel classes.
Under the newly negotiated terms, the unionized employees will receive a $1.20 raise per hour over the next three years.
Part of their argument involved equal pay for the female employees.
“Our members have worked hard to earn more and to maintain their health benefits. I am really proud to call myself a Pawtucket School Lunch Worker,” said Carolyn DeOliveira; lead cook at Nathaniel Greene Elementary.
The workers now say the pay gap has been dramatically decreased.
