PLAINVILLE, Mass. (WLNE) — A Pawtucket man was killed in a fiery crash into water in Plainville, Massachusetts overnight on Tuesday.

Massachusetts State Police said a BMW crashed down an embankment, caught fire, and landed in several feet of water off Interstate 495.

Troopers were called to the crash shortly before 4 a.m.

They jumped into the embankment and found the driver in the passenger side of the car, face down in water.

Troopers pulled the driver, 23-year-old Sage Woodward, out of the car with assistance from two good Samaritans and tried to revive him.

Plainville rescue crews arrived and rushed Woodward to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Taunton, where he died.

One trooper suffered a cut to the hand and was treated for his injuries.

While the official cause of the crash is under investigation, detectives believe the BMW may have hit the guardrail on the right side of the road, forcing it to veer left across all three lanes into the median.

The emergency response closed two lanes for over three hours. Traffic was back to normal by 7 a.m.
