Pawtucket man sentenced for defrauding SNAP and U.S. Treasury of over $100,000

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Pawtucket man was sentenced on Tuesday for defrauding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and the U.S. Treasury of more than $100,000, according to the office of Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom.
Reynaldo Martinez, 32, was sentenced to 73 months and one day in jail, followed by three years of supervised release.
According to the office of Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom, Martinez obtained at least 40 SNAP EBT cards by using stolen identities, fraudulent Social Security numbers, and fraudulent drivers licenses.
In total, he obtained $33,192 in SNAP benefits.
Martinez also defrauded the U.S. Treasury by cashing altered Treasury checks made payable to himself.
Along with co-conspirators, Martinez obtained checks made payable to others and altered the checks to reflect the identities on fraudulent driver’s licenses.
This scheme netted Martinez about $79,532.
On April 2, Martinez pled guilty to two counts of conspiracy and one count each of misuse of a Social Security number and aggravated identity theft.
Court records show Martinez has also been convicted of multiple counts of fraud in multiple states from as early as 2012, and served 48 months in prison for a 2017 fraud and identity theft case in Rhode Island.
