Pawtucket police kill man wanted in Mass on gun charge
A man wanted in Massachusetts on a gun charge was shot and killed by Pawtucket police officers on Wednesday evening.
Pawtucket police are calling the shooting an act of self-defense.
They say that the man, identified by his family as 35-year old Jamie Coyle, was shot as he was getting out of his car and tried to shoot at police at about 6PM.
All the witnesses ABC6 News spoke to were either friends with or family with Coyle and they paint a different picture.
They claim that Coyle didn't try to leave his Dodge Charger or point anything towards police.
One witness who is related to Coyle says that he saw Coyle slumped over inside the car, after being shot.
There was a woman with Coyle inside the car at the time of the shooting, she wasn't injured or arrested as a result of the incident.
Pawtucket police were tipped off the Coyle might be in the area visiting family, when they confronted him.
The situation has Coyle's friends and family shaking their heads.
“I'm just in shock, still can't believe it. He had kids and was always playing with the kids outside, he used to even go to my mom's house, he was just a very, very good person.” said Coyle's friend Lisa Cintron.
ABC6 News has been told that there were 2-police officers involved in the shooting.
The incident is being investigated by both the Rhode Island State Police and the Rhode Island Attorney General's Office.
