Pawtucket says demolition of Winters Elementary School will begin next week

PAWTUCKET, RI (WLNE) – It has been dormant since last summer but the City of Pawtucket announced Thursday that demolition for Winters Elementary School will begin the first week of June.
Demolition of the old Winters school will make way for a new school building. The city plans to welcome students to the new building by Fall 2022.
Sources tell ABC6 that there were many issues with the old building of Winters Elementary including mold and electrical issues.
“We are committed to providing all of our students with a conducive environment to learn,” said Mayor Donald R. Grebien. “The demolition of Winters is yet another step in the right direction as we continue to upgrade all of our schools.”
Students and staff at Winters Elementary School have been moved to the Pawtucket Annex School on Central Avenue since September 2019.
The city says following on the heels of the complete renovation of both Potter Burns and Nathanael Greene Elementary Schools, Winters will provide a state-of-the-art STEAM facility for students.
Both Potter Burns and Nathanael Greene students and staff used the Pawtucket Annex School building (formerly St. Leo’s) while renovations were done on their buildings as well.
The city says all 17 of its public schools have received major health and safety upgrades.
