PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) – The Department of Public Safety announced plans Monday to upgrade the Pawtucket Fire Department Station located on Columbus Avenue.

The temporary closure of the station, expected to begin April 1st, will allow crews a chance to make repairs to the roof, install new washers and dryers, fire alarm systems and electrical upgrades.

The renovation will be completed with funds obtained from the American Firefighters Grant.

Authorities said that public safety services will not be interrupted by the closure, and closing the station temporarily will allow for upgrades to be installed more quickly.

“Our main priorities are the public safety of our residents, maintaining effective response times, and the health and safety of our firefighters,” said Acting Public Safety Director Police Chief Goncalves. “All of our residents will continue to have the same outstanding coverage from our Fire Department throughout this process.”

Renovations are expected to take six to eight weeks to complete.
