Pawtucket woman indicted on domestic violence murder in mother’s death

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Pawtucket woman accused of stabbing her mother to death was indicted on charges of domestic violence murder, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Pawtucket police said Sharita Watkins called 911 on Sept. 23 and admitted to killing her mother, Mary Melendez.

Officers responded to the Manton Street home and found Melendez suffering from multiple stab wounds. She later died at Rhode Island Hospital.

Detectives said Watkins later gave a full confession.

Police have not released further information on the alleged attack.

Watkins is expected in Providence County Superior Court on Jan. 10, 2024.
