PC Friars to Face UMass Lowell in Hockey East Semifinal on Friday

PC news release…

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Fresh off a two-game sweep in the Hockey East Quarterfinals, the second-seeded Providence College men’s hockey team will take on the fourth-seeded UMass Lowell River Hawks in the first Hockey East Semifinal contest at TD Garden in Boston, Mass., on Friday, March 18 at 5 p.m.

All three Hockey East Tournament contests next weekend will be televised live on NESN in New England and nationally on NBCSN.  Top-seeded Boston College will face off against sixth-seeded Northeastern in the second semifinal on Friday.  Saturday night’s title game is slated for 7 p.m.

The Friars ousted Merrimack in two games during the quarterfinal round at Schneider Arena this weekend, including a 2-0 shutout in game two on Saturday night to clinch the series.

The teams split their two games this season as the Friars claimed a 4-2 victory on Jan. 22 at Schneider Arena, before the River Hawks rebounded with a 3-1 win at the Tsongas Center the following night.

Providence looks to avenge a 2-1 loss to UMass Lowell in the Hockey East Semifinals three seasons ago.  Overall, the Friars are 3-6-1 all-time against the River Hawks in Hockey East Tournament play.

This weekend will mark the fourth semifinal appearance for the Friars in five seasons under Head Coach Nate Leaman and the 14th overall semifinal appearance in team history.  Providence has not appeared in the Hockey East title game since 2001.
