PC Women Lose to BC in Nationally Televised Game

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –
The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Boston College,
80-71, in its final non-conference
contest of the season on December 29. The Friars move to 5-6 on the
year while the Eagles improve to 8-5. Junior guard Tori Rule
(Minneapolis, Minn.) led the Friars in scoring with 23 points to mark
her ninth double digit scoring game of the season. In addition
she tallied three steals and dished out two assists.
Boston
College opened the game shooting a perfect 7-of-7 from the field to
take an early 18-3 lead (15:32). The Eagles' 15 point advantage served
as their
largest lead of the half. The Friars outscored the Eagles by a 17 point
margin (32- 15) to take their first lead of the game, 35-33, at the
1:38 mark. Providence captured its lead on a pair of free throws from
junior Alexis Harris (Detroit, Mich.). The Eagles
closed the half with three-consecutive baskets and carried a 40-37
advantage into the break. Kristen Doherty led the Eagles in scoring and
finished the half with 15 points.
Providence
shot 50 percent from the field on 12-of-24 attempts in the first half.
In addition the Friars shot 6-of-10 from three point range. Senior
Danielle
Pearson (Bronx, N.Y.), junior Tori Rule (Minneapolis, Minn.) and
freshman Miranda Simpson (Round Rock, Texas) each hit two 3-pointers in
the first 20 minutes of play.
Providence
reclaimed the lead in the beginning of the second half on a 3-pointer
from Rule (18:02) to give the Friars a 42-40 advantage. Boston College
outscored Providence, 30-10, to take an 18-point lead with 6:56 left to
play.
Providence pulled within nine points of the Eagles, 80-71, with
27-seconds remaining, but that was as close as they would get. In the
final 20 minutes of play Boston College shot
60 percent from the field and 50 percent from three point range.
Doherty finished as the Eagles' leading scorer with 23 points.
Freshman guard Sarah Beal (Matthews, N.C.) finished the game with four points and tied her career-high with seven assists.
Providence
returns to action on Jan. 1 for its BIG EAST home opener when the
Friars welcome Butler to Alumni Hall for a 1:00 p.m. tip off for the
first
meeting in the history of the two women's basketball programs.
